Future Tense (A Fluffy 1Shot, K+?)
This is sort of how I imagined the last scene of the last episode... Well, the PG-13 version, anyway. Let's hope it's a little more smutty than this! Hahhahaha!
Gravitation is not responsible for people falling in love. ~Albert Einstein
A soft knock at the door lifted my eyes to the frame. A familiar figure stood in the door. A man of forty-seven, his hands in tucked casually his pockets, thumbing the keys I knew he held between his thumb and forefinger.
I smiled, "Hi, Booth." He walked in and took a seat across from me in the chair I only kept for grad student interviews. The look on his face was unreadable. My eyebrows met in the middle as I studied his face cautiously, "What is it?"
"We need to talk, Bones."
I took off my glasses and laid them on my desk. They seemed to be needed more and more over the past few years. I suppose it had something to do with all of the squinting involved in my job.
"What is it, Booth?"
He squirmed uncomfortably in his seat, then rose. "Think we can talk outside?"
"My office is as private as any other place in the Jeffersonian."
"Just come with me. To the diner, OK?"
I nodded and followed wordlessly, uncertain of what to say as I followed his footsteps through the halls, to the SUV, then to our familiar hangout.
He sipped his coffee quietly. The silence was enough to drive me crazy. I had to speak. About anything.
"Cam tells me that the big ultrasound is on Thursday."
Booth smiled softly, "She'll be a great mom, Bones."
More silence.
"Angela's pretty excited. Maia will have somebody to play with."
Booth didn't reply.
"What's going on? Talk to me, Booth. We're partners, right?"
Booth sipped again before laying the cup down with a sigh. "Parker was accepted to George Washington."
The levity of the situation must have slipped me altogether. "Well, that's great, Booth. George Washington's Law School is extremely prestigious. Why aren't you glad? I thought this was a good thing."
"George Washington University is also the third most expensive college in the nation, Bones." He fiddled with his pie without taking a bite, then dropped the fork and sighed.
"So you're going to tell him not to go?" I considered this for a moment, "He could get his prerequisites out of the way at a state school, then later transfer. It'll be cheaper that way."
Booth shook his head, "No. I told him congratulations."
"I don't understand, Booth. Why do you look so morose?"
"Look, this is hard for me, Bones." He sighed again and ran a hand through his hair. Finally, he met my eyes with what seemed like a strength pulled deep from within.
"Then, whatever you're saying, just say it. Like you told me last week. Like a bandanna."
"Band-aid, Bones." For a moment, he smiled, then the smile fell again and the tension rose again in the room. "A couple of weeks ago, Deputy Director Post offered me a promotion. I told him I'd think about it."
"What... what kind of promotion?"
"Deputy Head of Black Ops. It's--It's an anti-terrorism--"
"I know what it is," I replied coldly. "So... what does this mean for us? For our partnership, I mean?"
His eyes shifted back to the table. "Parker's tuition is more than my current salary, Bones. I love my son and I don't want him to have to pay off his school bills til he dies. I accepted the position."
Looking over his shoulder and avoiding eye contact, I blinked away angry tears. This man who I trusted was sitting here and telling me that... that that was it. That was all.
"Excuse me," I said icily, then rose and walked out of the diner. I should have known that something was up. The last few weeks had seemed so odd, so cold, so stilted. I should have known that he was keeping something like this from me.
In the street, I could hear him yelling my name. "Bones! Wait up! Bones, wait! Temperance!"
With that I turned. It had been years since I had heard him call me by my first name. "Where, exactly, are you being transferred, Booth?" The heat rose to my cheeks, fury painted my face.
"Bones, I--"
"Just answer the question, Booth! Answer me! Where? New York? LA? Seattle? F-cking Florida?"
With that he paused. I realized that was the first time I'd dropped the F-Bomb in front of him. "Bones," he said softly.
"Just go away. You know how I hate change. Maybe it's better if we don't see each other for a while." I turned and continued down the street, but he pursued me.
Ignoring his imploring voice, I walked past my car, unwilling to stop to unlock it and possibly be cornered in a conversation I did not care to be part of. After a block or two, I turned down a familiar street. A brick building was on the left.
"Bones! Could we just skip this part? Stop!"
"Just leave me alone, Booth!"
"What's it gonna take, huh?"
I stopped and turned around. "Things to be like they once were."
"Things have to change, Bones." He walked up to me, stopping about a foot from me.
I crossed my arms, feeling a little petulant, but completely hurt. I looked around, realizing where we were standing.
"What happened to Scully and Molder?"
"Huh?" He asked.
"Nothing. So... we're not partners any more?"
He took a step toward me and smiled cautiously. "Not after Monday. I'm sorry, Bones..."
"Tempe," I said.
"Huh?"
I smiled, but I was sure he couldn't read my full expression on my face. "You can't keep calling me Bones now. Bones is a nickname you gave your partner," I said slowly as I thought it through. "Dr. Brennan is the name you call someone who is hardly an acquaintance. Temperance is a name that my mom called me. Tempe... is name that you call your girlfriend."
"What?"
I reached out and held his hand. "If we're no longer colleagues, then that damn line no longer exists. Am I right?"
"Bones..." He smiled.
I cut him off with a kiss. A kiss that represented almost fifteen years of unrequited sexual tension. Fifteen years of being off limits, not being able to touch one another. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him closer, then reached southward for that damn provoking Cocky belt buckle.
He jumped back a little, "Woah."
"What?" I asked breathlessly.
"Sorry. It's just..."
"Hard to get used to? Not for me. Now your place or mine?"
"Huh?" His voice was uncharacteristically high and squeaky.
"For sex. Yours or mine?"
For the first time I saw his face relax. "Bones--"
"Tempe."
A smile twitched at his lips, "Tempe..."
"I know what you are going to say, Booth."
"Is that right?"
"You're going to say that it isn't sex. It's making love."
"Yeah, Bones..."
"So that's a yes?"
"To--"
"To the making of love. Your place or mine? You haven't answered my question."
"How about mine? It's closer." He reached down and intertwined his fingers in mine as we walked toward the SUV. "Or we could split the difference."
"I don't know what you mean."
"My place, then yours."
I smiled, "I'm glad you got the promotion, Booth."
"Me, too."
"So this counts as celebration sex, right?"
"What?"
"Angela told me about celebration sex. So doesn't that null the love-making sex?"
"Meaning we'll have to do it twice in both places to make it legit?"
"You are a very smart man, Booth."

I like it.
But I don't get what that has to do with the last episode?

liked it. Though I think I'd be highly disappointed if it took them 15! years to get together... and moreover that we don't get to see more of it. =)

OH Jeez, I know. I was sitting around thinking "What if it really did take them until their partnership ended... and what would make it end?"
I honestly pray that it DOES NOT TAKE that! Seriously... lol!
Re: Future Tense (A Fluffy 1Shot, K+?)
that was so fab and it would be a brillaint ending if Bones was to ever end (which it never can lol). Loved the story x x

Somehow I forgot the "Fluffy" label on this one, because I was balling my eyes out! Then, it got real good! But that line about Cam and the ultrasound - I started wondering if Booth and Cam had gotten together and she was having his baby!!?? Whew!
