the Rangers win again! It wasn't a fluke!
Henrik played like a king and certainly has the ability to rival Bobby Lou. ooo Bobby Lou vs. King Henrik Stanley Cup Finals... HA! Fat chance. Rangers couldn't make it that far...

Boston and Mtl last night was just brutal(for the Habs)...Mtl you better get the fire under your ass or else you might get booed out of the Bell Centre. I don't think Price will be starting. You'd think with the Boston fans taunting with the 'ole' chant that would get you fired up, apparently not.
Calgary's had some tough losses, close games. Maybe a return to Cowtown will help them out.
Here's to the Canuck's closing it in STL

And the Canucks go up 3-0 with a 3-2 victory over St. Louis, and that's without Sundin and Pyatt. I can't wait for everyone to get back!!

I finally got to sit down this afternoon and watch the game through the 2nd period. It was 2-4 when I left. I might learn a little about this game yet!!! I kept hearing the announcer refer to the blue line. I think I saw a blue line closer to the middle in each territory. What's with the blue line?
What's a Power Play and how do you get one? At first I thought it was something sponsored, like the Navy net cam, but finally realized it was something with the game!

Re: Hockey [Discussion Thread]
Power play(PP) is what a team gets when their opponent gets a penalty. The team with the penalty only has 4 players on the ice (plus goalie) while the other team remains at full strength with 5 players and a goalie. This lasts for 2 mins (if there's blood it's longer), so basically it's a 5 on 4 and so a better opportunity to get a goal. Sometimes a team with a penalty gets another penalty during their first penalty and thus the other team has a 5 on 3 advantage. The power play end as soon as A) with the PP scores or B) time runs out. If it is a 5 on 3 situation and the team with the PP scores then it becomes a 5 on 4 so they can use the remaining time as a 5 on 4 advantage. If the team who has the penalty scores against a team on the PP, then it is called a short handed goal since they are down a player. Those are always exciting when your team does that.
Blue lines have something to do with offsides I think?? Something like the player with the puck can't pass it to his teammate until the teammate has passed the line?????????? Or if the player crosses it before the puck does???? I should probably know this by now...

Re: Hockey [Discussion Thread]
The Power Play sounds really cool. I don't know of any sport where they make you short your team on the field! Ups the ante quite a bit!!CanadianBones wrote:Power play(PP) is what a team gets when their opponent gets a penalty. And the blue line, the way you speak, makes me think of off-sides in soccer. I believe it's the lead guy down the field can't be in possession of the ball after a certain point. There has to be someone else in front of him. I'll look it up!
Thanks for your help, CB!! Now that I know something about that I'm sure I'll hear something else next time!
What about the fighting though? I've always known that hockey's that way, but is it just because they want it to be that way? Or ... what's that all about?

Re: Hockey [Discussion Thread]
The two blue lines divide the ice from the neutral zone, (the middle of the ice) from the attacking/defending zones. A player can't cross the blue line of his attacking zone before the puck, or offsides is called and play is stopped. I think that makes sense...lol
And yeah, I know...Biron has pretty blue eyes...he just needs to play more consistently for me...

Re: Hockey [Discussion Thread]
As far as I know, fighting has always been a part of hockey. Some want it out, some want it to stay. I think because now the equipment the players wear is harder the players are sustaining greater injuries, plus a lot of them don't have their helmet chin strap done up tight so the helmet can come off easier (which to me is dumb, but if that's the way they want to play and take that risk then so be it. I'm also a girl so their might be some sort of tough guy thing happening there too). I don't really get the whole fighting thing, usually because it just ends up in a penalty. Sometimes players fight to get their team into the game, it's called "showing some emotion" or "standing up for a teammate" (if another player was hit hard/cheap shot) so in that way it is viewed as a respect thing.
Sometimes insanity breaks out and this results
[Only admins are allowed to see this link] (Sens and Flyers)
[Only admins are allowed to see this link] (Sens and Sabres)
(Biron and Emery) - that was crazy I remember watching it on TV...Ruff and Murray even got into it.
Watching woman's hockey is nice in the respect that they just play and don't fight. I'm not even sure what the rules are, but I really wouldn't even be shocked if they weren't allowed to fight.

Re: Hockey [Discussion Thread]
Okay, the blue line is exactly the way you are thinking about it in terms to soccer.....except unlike offside in soccer, the blue line is stationary, whereas obviously in soccer the "line" can move.
HOCKEY would SUCK without fighting, and if you don't believe me, just watch the crowd when the players are fighting, and right after. Bleeding hearts should stay out of hockey. I have seen a team down by three of four goals and their enforcer(tough guy) goes out and beats the crap out of the other teams enforcer and it kicks the rest of the team in the ass. Sometimes fights need to happen, especially if a shitty fourth line player takes out a teams top scorer. Fighting will always be a part of Hockey, and it's the part I love the most!!

Re: Hockey [Discussion Thread]
Thanks Fly & CB for the hockey lesson. Those were some nasty clips of fighting. I can go for watching it on TV, but it would be culture shock for me to actual watch it in the arena, or at least the walking out to the parking lot afterwards!! All the sporting events that I've ever been to - baseball, football, basketball, soccer - a fight with even a smidgeon of that intensity means trouble outside! Makes me feel football is really just a walk in the park!!
But I can't imagine a mother taking her little boy to sign him up to play! I heard David say in an interview once that he didn't get to play hockey because his mother wasn't going to get up and take him to practice at that ungodly hour of the morning, but I suspect that she used that as an excuse to keep him out of the game!

Bella, Really all I was getting at with the fighting question, was something along the lines of ... does hockey in some form date back to the Vikings, or something "brutal" like that?
But really it is amazing that in the pc world that we live in that they let them still go at each other like they do!! Believe me, I'm just an outsider. I don't seek to change a thing - just to understand what I'm watching!

Re: Hockey [Discussion Thread]
Oh, there's no worry about the kiddies...no fighting allowed till you get to the big leagues. And trust me, I've been to many games, and there has never been a problem after the game. It's just not like that. The fighting is part of the game, it's not a grudge that carries over outside. Not saying that it would never happen, but it's rare. Fighting is basically used to get a player/team off their game...and to defend their own players. And to rev up the crowd...it's amazing what can happen when you've got 20,000 screaming fans cheering your team on...lolDBCrazy wrote:Thanks Fly & CB for the hockey lesson.
