Nothing, they just give him a new contract.
The Canucks signed Manny Malhotra. three years, $7.5 million, with an average of $2.5 million a year, plus he gets a no trade clause

Apparently Volchenkov was offered 20 million over 4 years from the Sens but said no...
don't go Volchie please, you are the second goalie on the ice. He wants 5 million...ok really how is your life going to change from 4million versus 5 million...Instead of a team salary cap how about a player salary cap. honestly why do they get paid so much. Most of us pay to go to post secondary and actually learn a skill and then we will never ever make as much money as they do. And it's called we're at the cap and we need to dump salary so why not get rid of 5 mil that goes at the end the season anyway and get someone instead of no one since Gagne will get injured now.
I only wish the Rangers went after him harder.
On another note, Tampa Bay ought to be dangerous if they get the right coaching.

He probably would have been gone at the trade deadline anyway. And it didn't matter what player they got in return, they needed to shed the 5 million. And trading was better than putting him on waivers like they had originally planned to, where he would have gone to a team for just about nothing. A team like the Islanders...

I still don't have to like it. They need to focus on getting skilled forwards and a consistent goaltender; instead, they build even more on their tough guy defense. And yes, I know that's what they always seem to do, but I don't have to agree with it. Of course, what the hell do I know? lol
