The almost thing = "suspense?"
Suspense is actually a keyword for Gothic since you expect dreadful things to happen - but won't come! Silly, isn't it? Also, 'almost' is used multiple times. You know something is almost happening - but not quite. Isn't it confusing a bit?
It just sounds tiring and teasing.

That's the whole point. That's why it was sooo hard to read it for the first time. For me it seemed as if I would never get to the end. But...now I am dealing with different aspects of the novel so all is good. Very Happy
