Re: I Hart Booth Fan Club
K this is the big headline in our local paper
‘I never thought they could do it’
Downtown parade rings in nation’s 232nd anniversary
By PAUL POST, The Saratogian
The Ballston Spa Fire Department and a fire truck participate in Saturday’s parade.
SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Spa City continued its holiday weekend festivities on Saturday, starting with a spirited if somewhat short-lived parade down Broadway.
Hundreds of people lined the street, many of them clad in red, white and blue and carrying small flags to help America celebrate its 232nd birthday.
The roughly 20-minute parade featured everything from marching bands to vintage and classic cars, which lined up afterward for an “Oldies but Goodies” show.
“We had a lot of fun,” said Rick Sherman of Saratoga Springs, who turned out with his wife and their young daughter, Lexi. “The weather’s holding up so that’s a good thing.”
They planned to stay downtown for other activities such as All-American dessert and barbecue festivals at participating restaurants. Festivities continued throughout the day, with a
2 p.m. Founding Fathers Tour, followed by Bands on Broadway during the evening hours.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, there will be a Patriotic Pooch Event on Grove Street near the City Center, where one lucky canine will be crowned Saratoga’s Most Patriotic Pooch 2008. The contest is open to all breeds.
Also today, Dave Patterson and Charles Kuenzel will lead an historic tour of Saratoga Springs, starting at noon from Grove Street near the City Center.
Saturday’s parade was much shorter than the city’s recent Flag Day Parade.
“They probably didn’t have time to organize two parades on such short notice,” city resident Dave Stack said.

“We were a little disappointed, but it was nice,” his wife, Chris Phillips, said.
British Gen. John Burgoyne, portrayed by Lake George’s Bruce Venter, has a different view of America’s Independence Day celebration.
“It would be better if we didn’t have it,” he said, jokingly. “It’s a day that I don’t think about, because back in England we don’t celebrate The Fourth. It’s just another day in the castle.”
The British, under Burgoyne’s command, lost the 1777 Battles of Saratoga, considered the turning point of the American Revolution. Venter said Burgoyne probably wouldn’t believe how America has prospered since then.
“I think I would be shocked,” he said. “Of course, I was shocked in 1777 when I was forced to surrender. I never thought they could do it.”
Following the battles, Burgoyne was sent to Boston where he was held prisoner until April 1778, when he was allowed to return home.
“He never fought again,” Venter said. “He became a very famous playwright in England and had four children after he reached 60.”
Venter portrays Burgoyne so that people can fully learn about the Revolution by understanding the British side, too.

yeah, that map is. but I don't think it shows where anyone actually is... although when I'm home (instead of at work) mine puts me a bit closer to where I live, it's not very accurate ;-)
