Thursday ratings: 'Survivor,' 'Bones' battle it out

Season premieres brought some big numbers last night: Bones had its highest-rated premiere ever, and Survivor posted high ratings as well. NBC’s comedy line-up fared decently, with The Office and Community bringing in solid audiences, while Parks sort of struggled. The Vampire Diaries slipped from its premiere but still snagged an impressive 3.7 million, but Fringe dropped much of its lead-in audience and lost over 700,000 viewers in its second half-hour.

TV Ratings Thursday: Strong: Bones; Weak: Parks, Office, Survivor; Good Start: Community

With 3 of the 5 broadcast networks airing their regular fall lineups there were ups and downs. NBC can be cheered by the premiere of Community, but the return of Parks & Recreation and The Office were both well down from last season’s premieres, while Jay Leno slipped from Wednesday’s results. On Fox, Bones opened up over its premiere last season, a rare result, but Fringe was down. CBS’s Survivor: Samoa premiere was down sharply.

On the CW, Vampire Diaries was down from its premiere last week 24% to a 1.6 rating for adults 18-49 (from a 2.1), and 26% to a 1.7 rating for adults 18-34 (from a 2.3). That’s quite a drop in blood pressure. Supernatural fell 14% to a 1.2 rating for adults 18-49 (from a 1.4), and 13% to a 1.3 rating for adults 18-34 (from a 1.5).

Bones opened up 3% with a 3.0 rating for adults 18-49 vs. last season’s (9/10/08) 2.9/9, 8.908 million. Any increase in broadcast television is a rare event. Fringe was down 9% to a 2.9 rating for adults 18-49 vs. last season’s 2 hour premiere after House (9/9/08) 3.2/9, 9.047 million. Not a bad result in its new timeslot.

Survivor: Samoa opened down 22% to a 3.5 adults 18-49 rating vs. last season’s Gabon premiere (9/25/08) 4.5/11, 12.914 million.

NBC’s The Office started off down 18% with a 4.0 18-49 rating vs. (9/25/08) 4.9/11, 9.195 million. Parks & Recreation fared even worse, down 30% to a 2.1 18-49 rating vs. last season’s (4/9/09) 3.0/9, 6.77 million. The bright spot for the night was Community which held 93% of Office’s 18-49 audience to premiere with a 3.7 rating. The Jay Leno Show fell to a 2.7 adults 18-49 rating, down from the fast affiliate 3.0 18-49 rating on Wednesday.
