Since I'm the only person-by Squinty Eye-posted Posted 24/05/2008
who can't seem to let this go (LOL, sorry people!) I'm gona post all of my gripes with the finale here. If you can refute them, please do. If you have more to add, please do! I know it won't change squat, BUT maybe it'll make me feel better.
The timeline is screwed UP:
In Knight in the Grid, Zack supposedly killed the lobbist, yes? He MET Gormogon 3 months ago. (I'm fairly certain he didn't kill for him the day they met-- I don't care WHAT kinda logic you've got going on). I know that television timelines aren't "real world" timelines, but... Wait.
The KitG happened BEFORE the Santa in the Slush which OBVIOUSLY happened in December. With "The Pain in my BUTT" episode airing this week, it's May. 5 months after the Christmas episode... Which happened AFTER KitG.
In that ep, as we recall, the bad guy tried to drown a kid in a backyard pool. The pool was not covered and no one was wearing jackets (save the baddie who was in black leather). It DOES get cold in DC people. This leads me to believe that it was NOT something that happened in the late fall, but rather end of summer MAYBE beginning of fall. (I live in Alabama, we only have 2 seasons here-- Hot and HOTTER).
And now my long list of reasons :
1) The guy on the motorcycle who bombed B and B and tried to drown the child were the same as the guy who jumped out of the closet-- same clothes-- incidentally, the guy who jumped out of the closet was NOT Eric Millegan-- it was credited to another actor.
2) The recap on the Fox website says that the lobbyist was accosted by a 15 year old with a crazed smile. Zack does look young-- he does NOT look 15. If it was Zack, why would the show's own official site have that recap? If it were Zack it woudl have simply said he was attacked by a man with a crazed smile. Period. End of story.
3) Zack eats macaroni and cheese everyday for lunch. And there was a "cuppa soup" thrown in there once. He sounds about as adventurous as my toddler when it comes to trying new foods-- I'm thinking human flesh would NEVER make it onto his menu. (And the other apprentice was cannibalistic, one would assume the new one would have to be also-- kind of a test of loyalty, I would imagine.)
4) When the first apprentice (DiamondTooth) died, Sweets (who had just popped up, hmmm) said that Gormogon would be looking for another teen apprentice. Again, though he looks youthful, I believe Zack is 27 this season (and EM is in his 30s).
5) The orginal Gormogon (ToothlessGuy) worked in the fostercare system. It was where he found his apprentices amongst the troubled teens. Zack's family is healthily intact-- not to mention his lab family whom I think he's bonded with even more so than his blood relatives.
6) In the Knight in the Grid ep, Zack happily refers to the killer as "Gormogon". In the Pain in my Butt (haha) episode he got heated (for Zack, at least) when Booth referred to him as Gormogon and was insistant that he was called "the Master".
7) Yes, when Zack gave his monologue about how to find Gormogon he said "I was blindfolded when he first took me there"... First implying he'd been more than once. He also said, "So, when he brought me home, I found it on a map" implying he'd never been given directions to get there on his own. Or else he would've said "You take a right here, a left there, blah blah blah." If time was taken to blindfold him, I would be willing to bet that Zack wouldn't have gotten to SEE the outside of the house-- in which case the whole "blue door" thing doesn't work. And if Zack knew all of this from returning to the house without the Master (how? he doesn't drive) he would not have instinctively known that there was a key to the right just above eye level in the bricks.
This might be a stretch, but we never heard Zack CONFESS. He gave info that led to the capture, yes. But, as far as saying that he killed Ray Porter, we did not hear that. Caroline Julian says that Zack killed him by stabbing him through the heart-- Does anyone remember the Mother and Baby in the Bay ep? When all of the squints plus Booth stabbed the dummy to get an idea of force for a killing, Zack barely even hit the dummy. Not impossible, but... I would say definitely implausible.
9) Zack has a serious case of hero worship for Booth and Brennan. I'm sorry, but he would NOT knowingly fall to life of murder that would put him at odds with people he loves (B and B, Angela, Hodgins, Cam). And he came in during the FIRST Gormogon case. He knew that everyone was totally disgusted by the killer. Also, he would not sit idly by while Gormogon tried to kill his mentor and Booth as happened in this episode.
10) Gimme a break. It's ZACK.
And lastly (for now)
My new issue is... Zack's too smart to hide the bones where they'd be identified ON SIGHT. I would think that since the lobbyist was around 40ish, he would take care to hide the bones in the boxes of bones of similar age/sex/size. At least then no one would open the box and be like "Oh! Here's one!" I mean, if I were him, I'd have been sneakier. A 40 year old's bone with a box of 4 year old's bones? Too obvious.
And also... Is Zack even CAPABLE of lying? I mean... His personality just doesn't seem like he'd be able to make an incorrect statement AKA a LIE with ANY credence... He's TOO rational.
So, who can help me build a bridge and get over it? Or add more to my list?

Well, im thinking you will have to let it go squint...it has happened and we have to deal with it...here is my take on your observations...
With the time of year thing, i think that is just down to tv time being different and im sure they didn't think anyone would actually think about it this deeply ..lol
1) you are right..it was a different actor. I this is because when KotG was filmed they hadn't planned on zack being the apprentice at the time
2)again just think as it was never originally going to be zack, its all a little muddled
3)they said that zack never actually ate anyone, just murdered someone.
4)again this is where the story go's a little, not only was the apprentice supposed to be a teen but according to sweets will also be a widows son! agree with you on this one
5)same as above
6)maybe he called him gormagon in previous episodes just to go along with the flow..if he starting saying that it's not gormagon it's the master then the others would suspect something.
7)My take on this was that zack was blindfolded but he was able to work out which directions he was going, so he got a map to find the place and then had been back since...hence knowing about the blue door...the key errrrrr.... not sure about this one!
I agree...but zack did state that he is "deceptively strong" so with the right motivation then maybe he would do it..who knows!!!
9)totally agree..no explanation. Also, as I have stated before, zack is pretty much a literal thinker. Having had experience working with people like zack, whom i believe definately boarders aspergers, literal thinkers do not make good lyers and decievers, they find the concept difficult to grasp, which is why they can be so tactless and just say it as it is, in the same way as not understanding jokes. Zack doesn't seem to have the ability to lie in my eyes from what we know of him so it seems very implausable to me that he could keep such a big secret and lie and decieve for months and months!!!!
10) i think he is too smart to have hidden the bones in this way so im thinking that maybe he wanted to be found out in some way..to make it come to an end.
I think I have come to the conclusion that the strike really messed things up. Although according to HH, zack was always going to go in some way he was never orignally going to be gormagon. We have missed so many episodes in between which missed alot of story out. They needed to wrap it up quickly. There were things I like and things which didn't make much sense and I would have prefered them to have carried gormagon on to S4 just so it could be explained properly..but it's done now and I think we should just sit back and look forward to S4, If we carry on trying to be too logical about this episode we will drive ourselves nuts!!!!! x x

All of your points are accepted, of course. But, I'm still irked. And will remain so if there's no more of an explanation.
Will I quit watching? Ehhh... Probably not? I mean, I still love Booth and Bones and Hodgela and Cam... Will I watch happily or will I always be a little miffed that logic took a COMPLETE departure. I'm thinking I might stay miffed. 'Course, I would be miffed if the baddie was any of the core group, because, as is driving me nuts now... It just wouldn't make sense.

I am hoping things will be explained through S4, when they visit zack in the hospital and such. I am also hoping that all this will lead to new and interesting dynamics and character development. Zack could never be replaced, his character was beloved by all who watched the show but it doesn't mean the show will be dissapointing from here on out. HH and crew have proved how talented they are so far and I am sure they won't let us down. I really believe that the strike was to blame for illogical errors in the episode. Please dont worry squinty... Im sure as August rolls around you will feel much less hurt and very excited for the new season x x

you are NOT the only person! definitely not!
but wracking your brain about all the things that are completely illogical won't help, because we know by now that they just didn't bother to make it work. they just wanted to "shock" us. and i am still in shock, too.
i still love pretty much all the rest of the 55 (?) episodes, and i love the cast, especially booth and brennan of course. so there is no way i'll stop watching just because of the finale. but the writers better get their act together. that was just embarrassing. they should really be ashamed about what a bad job they did.
and i will still be sad whenever i rewatch scenes with zach.

I think that's what I find that much more disturbing... I've never seen an ep of this show that I felt was poorly done. Some I didn't like as much as others-- But I've never finished watching thinking "Huh?" It's always been nice and locial and SOOO well written.
Suppose that's why this ep was such a slap in the face for me.

Squinty Eye,
I agree with all the points you made. It's a shame to use the character this way! I will miss "The King of the Lab" sketches because of the good comic relief. What I want to know is how are they going to be able to use Zack--(in his current situation) in any plausible part of the show?

Guess they are using all the inconsistencies for storyline fodder for next season. With all Zack's ineptness--you know he tries! That's why we all love him!!!!
