season 3- Oh my God: Zach got injured!

I am watching these last episodes of season 3 before watching season 4.....And I was feeling so sad about the end of the season and this happens...
Oh dear!
First, they sent him to Irk, now this....and they introduced this "insider enemy" thing.
I'll watch the last chapter NOW

Well, I hope this show lasts a long time, it is so good!

My sister would appreciate your feelings--she started watching the reruns on cable (because I kept babbling about the show) and hit Wannabe in the Weeds for her 1st real episode (She watched Baby and Woman in Limbo and Aliens with me before). She also fell in love with Zack...oh, she was quite upset with the next episode!

not that I fell in love with Zach....but he was sooooo special and part of the lab....
i liked him a lot....so logical and brilliant minded!

How about that whole scene right after Booth got shot? She is praticaly oozing out emotions of turmoil and fear holding on to Booth while he is bleeding out?

Brennan isn't an emotionless being. She is filled with feeling from that episode "girl in the fridge" to this. It just takes a lot to break down her walls that she contains in all in.

I know! I loved that moment w (when Booth is on the floor, wrong place though in real life he would have broken his neck on the stairs!)...but then wt the funeral, when she is so "cool", too much.,..I did not like that.And then...again..I would have added a few tears,that would have been enough.Nothing "explosive" I mean, but more.

you see, she reacts fine when she learsn about Zach....teary eyes, contenment but her heart you can see!!! Booth should be there clearly too, especially in this season----just my opinion

Also realize that the "funeral" was 2 weeks after Booth got shot and we don't know what happened to her in between. Her reaction to Zach just like earlier to Booth was a visceral reaction, during the heat of the moment before she compartmentalized it all in.

It was 2 weeks? Wow, thats a long awaited funeral. Granted, it was fake, but still...

I see. It is just that I thought it would be an excellent occasion to show herself towards Booth in a different way.

In a way she does. She isn't going to make out with him while he bleeds to death. But then again, after reading... well never mind. Wrong place, wrong thread!

No--I believe she meant what she was going to say belonged in another thread.

As for Brennan, she is a tightly controlled person; it takes a lot for her to fall apart. She got teary-eyed when Max & Russ left, she was screaming at Booth to stay when he got shot. The way I see it is that 2 week period gave her time to try & rebuild her walls and regain her composure--the Ice Queen of the Jeffersonian thing--but you're right, El, it should have triggered some random thought that things aren't what they appear (plot bunny!). The timing of the whole Zack thing--well, we only saw her when suspicion was rising and when she was telling Booth and then the very end when it actually sank in and she's feeling guilt for her perceived role in it. We don't really know what happened in between scenes. Tons of fanfics with what we THINK she might have done, or felt, though.

That's a good point but IMO it's not even that. It's something Booth and Angela see in her, that maybe no one else sees because they just don't know her well enough. Brennan was probably never one of those people comfortable expressing herself emotionally - recall in Woman in Limbo she's talking to Angela about Russ and how there were times she'd be in school and the only words she'd say all day were "Polo" in response to his "Marco". That's not the sign of someone who's an outgoing person.

Brennan was, and is, naturally reserved. The sheer hell that Max and Ruth/Christine put her through by abandoning her and Russ, then Russ compounding the issue by abandoning her to foster care, only served to reinforce her quiet nature. Once in foster care Brennan learned that no one cared if you were crying, worse, it drew attention to yourself that you didn't want, it marked you as weak, as someone who could be taken advantage of, it made you a victim. So little Tempe learned to control her emotions, to compartmentalize, to rationalize, to elevate intellect over feeling. Those walls that we always talk about, they're a defense mechanism, partly natural, partly learned, partly intentional. We can see them being reinforced during her college years. College is a time that functions in part as the social developmental equivalent of "grad school" for most people (when we transition from restless children to restless young adults) Brennan threw herself into the role of serious student with an emphasis on heavy course work, in effect retarding her social development further and letting life pass her by.

The shy, quiet, reserved 15 year old girl who's precocious intellect and social awkwardness already marked her as an oddball among her peers became, after three years in hell plus the rigors of academia, the "Ice Queen of the Jeffersonian" (gotta love that phrase Dawn). Quiet became cold, shy became furtive, and reserved became robotic, and yet for all practical purposes Brennan was emotionally still a 15 year old girl when he met her, her development having arrested at the time she entered the system. It's to Booth's credit that he can see past her mask to the still tender hearted little girl beneath, and more so that he's spent the last four years helping her evolve into a more mature, emotionally speaking, woman.

Thus we can see that her reaction during his shooting isn't unremarkable, and her coldness after wards is to be expected. By the time Booth was shot by Pam Nunan he'd come to be more than just a friend to her, he was an emotional mentor, a confidante on par with Angela, and in many respects the dominant male figure in her life filling all roles from surrogate father/brother (until they both returned full time) to suitor. The prospect of losing him would have shattered all of her walls, ended any pretense of detachment and containment/compartmentalization would have been impossible. Following his "death" she would have reverted to the only thing she knew that worked and withdrawn to her "pre-Booth" persona.

Zach's betrayal was less a shock to her system and more a wound to her pride, IMO, in that she saw in him a kindred spirit and doted on him as a surrogate mother. His betrayal was all the more keenly felt because she tried to serve the same role in his life that Booth served in hers, and she sees herself as failing him. Yet she's not unemotional at his loss, she feels in keenly - so keenly that only Booth can help her deal with it.

Honestly the WITH and PITH episodes are, in my concerted opinion, grounds for Lance Sweets to lose his license as a psychologist, he obviously has no clue who his patients are and at that time he'd had them in session for months - I think BLC did it best (of course) when she wrote her own version of the aftermath, [Only admins are allowed to see this link].

Anyway, enough of my ramblings. Just thought I'd share a few thoughts.
