On a night of strikingly close overall competition, ABC and CBS
finished in a tie in both main adult demos for the night each with a
3.5 rating for adults 18-49 and a 3.1 rating for adults 18-34. Just
behind, NBC and Fox tied for 3rd in adults 18-34 and nearly tied for
adults 18-49. That’s the most closely contested night overall we’ve
seen in the past 2 years.
On a historical note, this year’s Thursday NCAA Tournament first round results were [Only admins are allowed to see this link].
The NCAA Basketball Tournament ruled the 8pm hour, easily besting all competition in the adult demos. Against basketball, Bones was u[Only admins are allowed to see this link]. Ugly Betty was near its season average. Smallville was down in both demos from last week.
Grey’s Anatomy was strong enough to hold off the Hoops and triumph at 9pm, but in doing so it delivered its lowest original 18-49 demo rating ever. Hell’s Kitchen, The Office and 30 Rock each slipped a bit from last week in the demos. Supernatural was close to last week’s level.
Private Practice also managed to beat the NCAA Tournament, and was up a tick in the 18-49 demo from last week. Without George Clooney, ER fell back to near its season averages.

Here is TV Guide's very own report...

Ratings: Supernatural Grabs a Few More Viewers
Thursday's ratings rundown:
8 pm/ET
With Survivor benched by basketball, Bones topped the hour with 10.2 million total viewers, a week-to-week gain of 650K. CBS' NCAA tourney coverage followed, averaging 9.42 mil across the night. In third, Ugly Betty inched up 360 thou, to deliver 7.56 mil.
Trailing NBC's Earl (6.42 mil)/rehashed Office combo, Smallville hit some "Turbulence," dropping 12 percent to 3.29 mil. Next week: Zatanna hits town, played by my new BFF, Serinda Swan (Q&A to come).
9 pm
With CSI riding the pine, Grey's Anatomy rebounded from last week's so-so numbers to deliver 14.36 million viewers, up 810K. NBC's The Office (7.95 mil, +450K) and 30 Rock (7.02 mil, +620K) both enjoyed gains, as did Supernatural, which at 3.15 mil scared up 11 percent more viewers.
10 pm
Private Practice capitalized on Eleventh Hour's time-out to secure first with 10.03 million viewers, up 11 percent week-to-week. ER understandably slipped 12 percent from Clooney's visit, yet still bested basketball to place No. 2 with 9.46 mil.

Ratings: March Madness shakes up Thursday

With CBS' coverage of the NCAA basketball tournament preempting juggernauts Survivor and CSI, competitors Bones, The Office, and 30 Rock all saw modest increases in viewership on Thursday night. Bones led the 8 p.m. bloc, narrowly besting CBS's March Madness coverage (which averaged 9.7 million viewers that hour). Grey's Anatomy and The Office saw gains over last week, while Hell's Kitchen fell slightly, and 30 Rock picked up about 600,000 viewers. While down slightly from last week's episode with George Clooney, ER still finished with its second-strongest showing of the season, but it still wasn't enough to top Private Practice.
