Return of the skeleton crew
The forensics crime team is on the trail of killer cannibals in a new series of Bones

Strolling around the LA set of his hit show Bones, David Boreanaz is looking effortlessly cool in his sharp suit and black tie. Look closer, though, and you notice he is rubbing his fingertips with hand cleanser. The mutilated corpse on the autopsy table has clearly unsettled him. "There are scenes in the show that get a little freaky", admits Boreanaz. "But I try not to focus on that too much."

There are plenty more 'freaky' scenes in store for Boreanaz as he returns this week as FBI agent Seeley Booth in a third series of the drama. A running storyline revolves around the search for killer cannibals after the discovery of a silver-plated skeleton. "Within that skeleton we discover clues to a possible serial killer; the bones come from more than one body", says Boreanaz.

The new series also promises further developments in Booth's relationship with forensic anthropologist Dr Temperance 'Bones' Brennan, played by Emily Deschanel. The sexual chemistry between the pair will continue to tantalise viewers, who have been willing the couple to get together ever since the show started two years ago.

It looked as though fans were about to get their wish at the end of the last series when the pair were left stranded at the altar as their friends and colleagues, Angela and Hodgins, fled the church on their wedding day. It turned out Angela was already married, but the lingering look between Booth and Brennan seemed to suggest that they were ready to admit their feelings for each other.

But rather than bringing them closer together, the incident seems to have driven a wedge between the two partners in this week's opening episode, with Brennan avoiding Booth's appeals to go out on an investigation with him. The divide eventually leads them to have therapy together. "The introduction of therapy for people that work together is a really interesting angle", says Boreanaz. "It's like a married couple. That's the nature of their relationship right now."

So will viewers ever get to see Booth and Brennan act on the spark between them? "Basically, our job is to tease the audience," smiles Boreanaz. "But there has to come a time when the two of them need to get together and kiss. I mean you can only dangle it so long..."

Inside information on the series [SPOILERS!!]

As well as her father's murder trial, Bones will have to deal with her reprobate brother Russ, who has broken the conditions of his parole and must face the music.

In a shocking twist, one of the Jeffersonian team becomes a murder suspect after the charred remains of a young intern are found in the building's incinerator. Internal tensions soon surface as personal and professional interests come into conflict.

Booth's grandfather will be making an appearance later in the run. "Booth didn't get along with his dad," explains series producer Hart Hanson. "But he certainly gets along with his grandfather, who is a big war hero."

In a halloween special (airing here in December), the team hunt a serial killer while wearing halloween costumes. "You can't do a halloween episode without costumes," says Hanson. "And for Bones, it had to be wonder woman."

Dr Jack Hodgins (TJ Thyne)
The insect expert is still in shock after learning that his bride-to-be Angela was already married. Hodgins stands by his fiancée, but he's not in for an easy ride.

Angela Montenegro (Michaela Conlin)
Angela and Hodgins hire a private eye to track down her long-lost husband so she can get a divorce, but his reappearance threatens to create more problems than it solves.

Dr Temperance 'Bones' Brennan (Emily Deschanel)
As well as her demanding forensic work, Brennan must also deal with the trial of her father Max (Ryan O'Neal) who's charged with the murder of the FBI's Deputy Director.

Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz)
The sceptical FBI agent becomes distracted from his work when his handsome former colleague Sully [WHAT?!?! *THUD*] turns up and shows a romantic interest in Brennan.

Dr Camille Saroyan (Tamara Taylor)
No-nonsense coroner Cam is in charge of the team once again, and she still has an eye on Booth, even though their relationship appeared to cool in the second series.

Dr Zack Addy (Eric Milligan)
At the end of the last series, genius Zack was heading to Iraq- only for him to return to the lab to help Booth and Brennan with their cannibal case.

The silver skeleton (unknown) [unknown?! =D lol]
The discovery of a headless silver-plated skeleton sparks a serial killer hunt. Is it the work of a cannibalistic cult?
