News Corps Cernin and Disney Izer to be Needed Again?
« Today's News: Our Take Strike Watch: SAG Eyes Execs Iger, Chernin to Enter Contract Fray
Robert Iger by Steve Granitz/WireImage.com and Peter Chernin by Bobby Bank/WireImage.comThe prolonged stalemate between SAG and Hollywood producers (AMPTP) has many in Tinseltown hoping two big guns — Disney chief Robert Iger and News Corp. president Peter Chernin — are ready to step in and speed up an agreement.
Variety reports neither Iger nor Chernin has announced plans to re-enter the fray. The two previously met with SAG leaders in April, advising them that producers were unwilling to extend beyond the concessions granted to directors and writers in their contracts reached earlier this year.
AMPTP's agreements with SAG and AFTRA each expire on June 30. The lack of an accord has slowed production of TV pilots and features and has Hollywood fearing an actors' strike may be on the horizon.
SAG has more than one battle on its hands. In addition to its own month-long talks with AMPTP, it is doggedly trying to dissuade AFTRA members from ratifying contract terms reached with producers last month. To gain leverage at the table, SAG has designs on bringing AFTRA members on board in a double-barreled negotiating approach.
AFTRA leaders, however, are just as strongly advising its rank and file to sign off on its own agreement, feeling the new media concessions it received from producers were fair.
This week, SAG enlisted Grey's Anatomy star Sandra Oh to call AFTRA/SAG dual cardholders and explain the importance of negotiating as one group.
