*sigh* I am having a busy day. I'm much too tired for a busy day. Figures, the one night I stay up late and don't go to bed on time is followed by a lot to do!

OK Turi. Here's what we're up against. Even if there is no signal anywhere around your wireless card the IP address should not be 0.0.0.0 It should either test as the default "home" address for every local network device (127.0.0.0) or as the hard coded IP address assigned to the wireless card by its manufacturer which is going to start last octet with 169 (169.?.?.?)

0.0.0.0 tells us that it is finding a network to register with but is getting confused. We need to be able to manually force the card to clear any IP address it insists on holding onto and then it will usually (but not always) find its way after that.

You would go to the START button (assuming Windows) and locate the "Run" menu option. That will pop-up a small window with a blinking cursor next to the prompt that reads "Open:" Type in the letters "cmd" without the quotation marks. That will open up a command shell that will let you see what's going on.

There will be some text but the end of all of it will have a a carrot and a blinking underline cursor ">_ " That is the prompt. at the prompt type the funny words I am going to tell you . . .

>_ ipconfig/release [No spaces around the forward slash character. It gets typed as all one word. That tells the computer to remove whatever IP information the network card (wireless card) is holding onto.]

It will come back with a little information about what the card currently has and that IP address should be 0.0.0.0

Next prompt

>_ ipconfig/renew [Again, all one word. This will try to locate a network that can supply a real address.]

If that doesn't work then it is probably the fact that the domain name of the local machine is not the same as the local network. Most Microsoft networks use a domain of "Home" or "workgroup" and if the computer has something other than those or the local network uses something other than those it makes this a pain in the butt.

By the way, if you want to shut down the crazy window where you would type this stuff just go ahead and close it. Nothing will break or blow up.

I suggest to try this first and in the meantime I will make a tutorial with pictures for the harder stuff to check. Maybe we get lucky and just forcing a rest of the card gives you your connection. Or, I fly down there and fix it . . .

she cant remember how many kids she has..but she has 4 grown up boys..they dont live that close..though one visits every weekend but she doesn't think she has seen them in a long time..and her sister comes round every other day..but she cant remember that either...i would rather shuffle off this mortal coil than end up like that!
