Trial by Fire - Page 2 Empty Re: Trial by Fire

Heather Taffett entered the courtroom, flanked by two security guards. They led her to where her attorney was seated. Her attorney pushed the chair out and motioned for her to sit. When she had seated herself, the guards went returned to their designated post, on either side of the main doors.

"All rise" Judge Merick entered the courtroom.

"Counselor," he was looking at Mr. James, "had you finished with the last witness?"

"For now, your honor. Now, I would like to recall Dr. Temperance Brennen to the stand."

Not a total surprise.

Brennen stood, and made her way forward.

"Dr. Brennen, you remember, your still under oath?" Judge Merick queried.

"I do, your honor."

"Mr. James, you may begin."

"Dr. Brennen, you are a anthropologist?"

"Yes."

"But, you have many degrees?"

"Several, yes, in difference sciences."

"That means your pretty smart, huh?" he smiled at her.

"Yes, I'm," she thought about, and decided to use his terminology, "pretty smart."

"Pretty smart, being what, brilliant, genius, IQ off the charts, kinda smart?"

"Your honor." Caroline butted in, "please, he's already established she's smart."

"Get to your point, Mr. James." the judge directed.

"Dr. Brennen," she looked at him. "Can you tell us what your relationship, is with Special Agent Booth?"

"Objection, your honor, relevance?" Caroline was steaming.

"I'm getting to the relevant part, your honor." he looked at the judge.

"Continue."

"Dr. Brennen what is your relationship with Special Agent Sealy Booth?"

"We were friends and partners." she replied, she looked at Booth.

"Were, Dr. Brennen?"

"Yes, when Agent Booth was kidnapped we were friends and partners."

"Wasn't he your date that night, to the awards banquet?" he asked.

"He was my escort, not my date."

"Forgive me, Dr. Brennen, not sure I see a difference, date, and escort, pretty much the same thing."

"Your honor," Miss Julian stood up.

"Mr. James, where are you going with this."

"I'm getting there right now, your honor. Dr. Brennen, you've had a relationship with Sealy Booth, for over 5 years now, correct?"

"Yes,"

"You feel some kind of loyalty, some kind of personal sentiment towards Agent Booth?" he looked at her, "What I mean is, you care about him?"

"Yes." she felt uneasy with the direction of these questions.

"So, you could and would remain objective, in a situation, where personal feelings, were involved?"

"Yes, I am very capable."

"So being your objective, scientist self, do you think it was possible, for my client, Heather Taffet, to physically subdue, abduct, and transport Agent Booth's prone body, thru his window, down his second story fires escape, to some kind of vehicle, to a boat, to a ship, into a miniature submarine, all by her self? And all fo this, without one single solitary witness to it" he waited.

"Dr. Brennen, answer the question, please."

Brennen looked out into the gallery, and looked at Booth. His face serious, and grave.

"I would have to conclude, that she had an acomplice helping her."

"There's no proof or evidence of an accomplice, is there?"

"No."

"So it is your brilliant, scientific opinion, that Heather Taffet, could not have been the one to abduct Agent Booth?"

"Yes, or no, Dr. Brennen?" he tried to nudge her answer along.

"Not by herself, no."

A murmur went thru the courtroom.

"Dr. Brennen you claim to be able to remain object, yet, you physically assaulted my client, didn't you?"

"I did not assault her."

"Didn't you, and your, cohorts, illegally, detain, my client?"without waiting for her answer , " You tied her up, to a chair, and you physically assaulted my client, who's hands were literally tied, unable to defend herself. Is that what you call being objective Dr. Brennen?"

"Heather Taffett is the grave digger, she is guilty."

"Is that your objective opinion, Dr. Brennen?" he mocked her.

"Your honor." Miss Julian threw her hand up.

"Sorry, your honor, I'm done with this witness.

Brennen stepped down from the witness stand, feeling shaken, and disturbed. Would she be responsible, for Heather Taffett getting off. She sat down, next to Booth.

Booth reached for her hand, and bent and whispered in her ear, "It's okay." She looked up at him, and tried to give him a smile, but failed miserably. He needed to make it okay, but didn't know what to do, for her.

"Your honor, the defense, recalls Special Agent Sealy Booth." this got Booth's attention.

Both unexpected and annoyed, he had thought his role in this trial was over with. Wasn't being raked over the coals once, enough, for this guy, unbelievable.

"Agent Booth, I am reminding you, your still under oath."

"Yes, your honor."

"Agent Booth, as we've established before, you, Dr.s Brennen, and Hodges were all victims of the grave digger, correct?"

"Yes."

"Were there other victims, of the Gravedigger? Besides, Dr.s Brennen, Hodgins, and yourself?"

"Yes."

"How many were there?"

"We know of at least a dozen."

"You know of? What does that mean?"

"It means, that there is a strong possibility, that the Gravedigger had victims, that paid the ransom, and never came forward."

"I see. Agent Booth, what was the Gravediggers intent with the kidnappings, prior to Dr. Brennen and Hodgins abduction. "

"The gravedigger kidnapped rich victims, and called their families, and gave them a ransom demand. "

"What did the Gravedigger usually say in these calls?"

"The Gravedigger usually demanded several millions of dollars from the family of the victims. "

"In return for what, Agent Booth."

"For the safe return of the victim. They were told, upon receiving the ransom, they would be notified of the whereabouts in time, to save their loved one. If no ransom was received, then they would never see or know what happened to them again. "

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the the main door open, and a guard step thru.

"Agent Booth, how many families, paid the ransom?"

"We know of ten."

The guard had skirted the court, going behind the pews, so not to disturb the trial. Booth noticed, he came up the middle, and bent, down on one knee, next to Brennen.

"So Agent Booth, we know of at least ten families paid, how much money was that?"

The guard still bent, handed Brennen a piece of paper. She had opened it up, and was reading it. She bent, and whispered something in Angela's ear.

"Agent Booth." Booth looked up.

"I just asked you how much money, had the Gravedigger aquired thru his ransom demands?"

"Each family paid two million dollars."

"So, ten families, each paying two million dollars, for the safe return of their loved ones, correct Agent Booth?"

Across the courtroom, Brennen stood, and quickly followed the guard to the back of the courtroom, taking the same path, as the guard, so not to disturb anybody, and walked out the door. What the hell was going on.

"Agent Booth," Booth turned his head, back and looked at him.

"Answer the question, please."

"I'm sorry, can you repeat the question."

"I asked you the specific amount of money, that you know of that the Gravedigger aquired thru ransom demands."

"Twenty million dollars, that we know of." Booth looked at the courtroom doors, again, where did Bones go.

"Did the FBI try to track down this money, Agent Booth?"

"Yes, we investigated it."

"And what did you find?"

"We didn't find anything."

"What do you mean, Agent Booth, does twenty million dollars just vanish, poof, into thin air?"

"Objection, your honor"

"Mr. James, lose the sarcasm."

"Yes, your honor. I will reword my sentence. Agent Booth, when you investigated Heather Taffett's bank accounts did you find anything suspicious or out of place?"

"No."

"It wasn't found in her bank accounts, the family vault, safety deposit box, off shore bank accounts, anything at all?"

"No." Bones, where are you?

"If the FBI couldn't find it, could that mean, that she never had it, to begin with?"

"Agent Booth, is it possible?"

Brennen was quietly listening to Booth, on the stand.

Caught up in his testimony, she didn't see the guard, until he reached out and tapped her on the arm. He was down on a knee, looking at her.

He bent his head towards her, and whispered, "I'm sorry, Dr. Brennen, but you had a call, and they said it was very important." he handed her a folded piece of paper.

She unfolded the note, it read: We have an emergency at the lab. Can you call as soon as possible, very urgent, concerning GD.

Brennen refolded the note, bent her head toward Angela, "I have to make a call, be right back." Ang nodded to her. She stood and followed the guard.

"Right this way, Dr. Brennen." he led her down a hallway, to a phone located in a office. She picked up the phone, "line 3, Dr. Brennen." She reached over to push the button. She had turned slightly towards the phone.

"Hello, this is Brennen, hello, hello." she pushed the button again. "Hello, hello...." she turned to the guard, "must have lost them, there's no one there." The guard grabbed her, and before she could react, he had jammed a needle deeply into her neck, and pushed the plunger . Oh, no, was her last thought, before darkness over came her.

"Well, Agent Booth? Is it possible that Heather Taffett doesn't have the money?" he looked at Booth.

Booth looked up, " It's possible." feeling uneasy, glancing towards the doors. Where is she?

"Therefore, doesn't it stand to reason, to you, that if she doesn't have the money, then she isn't the Gravedigger?" Booth didn't say anything.

"Agent Booth, if Heather Taffett doesn't have the money, and according, to expert witness, Dr. Brennen, she isn't physically capable of the crimes, that you acuse her of, could it mean she's not guilty?" he was looking at the jury.

"It's possible."

A low murmur rolled thru the crowd.

"Your honor, I'm done with this witness."

"Agent Booth, you can step down. We'll take a short recess." he stood, and stepped back into his chambers.

Booth, practically ran to Angela. "Where's Bones?" they were caught in the slow shuffle of people, headed towards the door.

"She said she had to make a call." Angela looked up at him, "Is something wrong?" his reaction, was alarming her.

"Let's just go find her." "Excuse us, excuse me, FBI, move people." he began elbowing his way thru the crowd, dragging Angela behind him. They reached the doors and stepped out.

He looked one way down the hall, and then the other. No sign of her. He walked over to where a guard sat behind a desk, viewing video screens and monitors . "Have you seen Dr. Brennen?"

"Yea, saw her walking with Wally down the hall, towards, the private offices." he pointed down the hall.

"Angela, stay here, and go over the last thirty minutes, of all the tapes, look for something suspicious." He turned back guard, "Find Wally, now!"

"Booth took off, at a swift walk. He ducked his head in each office, looking for her, alternating sides of the hallway. Going from one to the other, looking for a sign of her. Finding nothing, he was starting to get a bad feeling.

No sign of her. Clenching his fists in frustration, he looked down, and saw a folded piece of paper. Picking it up, and carefully unfolding it, he read it.

He pulled out his cell, and turned it on. He waited for the phone to power up, annoyed by the wait. As soon as it was powered up, it vibrated, telling Booth, that there was a voice mail. Ignoring it, he dialed the Jeffersonian.

"Mr. Nigel Smith speaking, how can of help you?"

Booth's eyes were drawn to the trash can, he had found the note, lying next to it, on the ground.

"This is Booth, did anyone there call and ask to speak with Dr. Brennen?" he was taking the lid off of trash can, poking around in it, looking for some clue, to help find Brennen.

"What is that?" talking to himself, Booth stumbled upon a syringe.

"No one, here called, Agent Booth, is something wrong?"

"I'll let you know." he snapped his phone shut. He dialed Cam's number. "Cam, Bones is missing, and I need you, and squints." He relayed his location, to Cam, trying not to panic.

"Sealy, what's going on?" Cam came rushing around the corner.

"I saw Bones leave, in the middle of court. Came out here to find her, and she was gone. The desk guard said she came this way. Cam, I found this." He handed her the note.

"Just a second, there could be evidence." She reached in her bag, and pulled out a pair of rubber gloves. Snapping them on, she reached for the note, and read it.

"And Cam, look at this." Booth was pointing to the syringe that lay on top, in the trash can. Cam reached it and picked it up, holding it up to her eye.

"We'll get these back to the lab, ASAP."

Booth's phone, vibrated again. It reminding him, he had a message. Cam was bent over, digging evidence bags out of her bag. He hit the message button. Hearing a deep intake of a breath, Cam glanced up. She stood up, immediiately, seeing the stark look that crossed Booth's face.

"Booth," Cam touched his arm, "Sealy, what is it?" a look of panic, crossed Booth's face.

"The Gravedigger has Bones."

"Really, your Honor, this is outrageous."

"Settle down, Mr. James. Miss Julian, you know the law. "

"Judge Merick, I thought you were the law." Miss Julian looked at him.

His eyebrows rose sharply, "Miss Julian, I'm going to let that go, given the circumstances. You know the law as well as I do, you know my hands are tied. I don't make the laws, just interpert them."

"You are really going to release a serial killer slash kidnapper?" outrage evident in her voice.

"According to your witnesses Miss Julian," Mr. James was looking at her, "my client is innocent. You have no proof, and no evidence. In fact, we're seriously considering pressing charges against Dr. Brennen, for assault."

"Your a class act James, given the current circumstances." disgust in her voice.

"Miss Julian, I see no other way around this, I'm going to have to have Heather Taffett released, and dismiss the case against her."

"Your honor, she is responsible for the deaths of innocent people."

"So you say, Miss Julian." Mr. James snarked at her. "Your honor, my client has already wasted two years of her life sitting behind bars, for a crime, that she didn't committ."

"I agree, Mr. James. Miss Julian, I have no choice. All charges are dropped, against Heather Taffett. "

"Your honor, this is a mistake."

"I can't over look the fact that Heather Taffett, was sitting in my courtroom, when the Gravedigger struck again. I'm sorry, Miss Julian. Mr. James, your client can go free."

Post by dawn Tue May 11, 2010 11:40 pm

Cam sighed, and reached for the phone. Booth answered on the first ring.

"Whata you got, Cam?"she heard the worry in Booth's voice.

"It was definately used on Dr. Brennen, Booth. It has her DNA, on it."

Booth was silent, for a few second, "What about the note, Cam, you find anything on it?"

"Nothing yet, Booth, we'll keep working on it."

"Thanks, Cam." he snapped his phone closed. It wasn't unexpected news, but it still hurt, to hear it. Turning on his heel, he headed back to the main desk, he had a few questions, for a certain security officer.

When they discovered Brennen missing, they had locked down the court. Allowing no one in, and only allowing those out, that had identification. The only people left in the courthouse, now, were law enforcement, and the court employees.

Booth came around the corner, and saw the securtiy officer, that had shown Brennen the note, and escorted out of the courtroom.

"Walter Canon." Booth read his name tag.

"Most people call me Wally." he looked up at Booth.

"You were the one that escorted Dr. Brennen out of the courtroom?"

"Yes, I was." he confirmed.

"Why?"

"I received a call, from the Jeffersonian. We all know who Dr. Brennen is around here, I mean, she's famous. So, when they said it was urgent, and needed to speak with her as soon as possible, I took her the note." he looked very sincere.

"And then?" Booth looked at him, sharply.

"I took her to the phone."

"And........" Booth looked at him, "what did you see? Anything susupicous? Anyone hanging around? Anything out of the norm? Nothing seemed odd to you, in any way?"

"I didn't see anything. I took her to the office, and left her there. I didn't know anything was wrong, until, I got a call on my radio." he looked at Booth. "I feel terrible about this, Agent Booth, I feel like it's all my fault."

"Why is that, Wally?" Booth was studying his face.

"Because I left her there." he gave a little sniffle.

"Alright, Wally, I need you to write a report, detailing the events of the day, starting with you taking that phone call, can you do that Wally?"

"Yes, Agent Booth, I can do that." Booth nodded at him, and walked away.

Booth opened his phone, and dialed. "Hey, Charlie, I need you to put a tracker on a vehicle. Walter Canon, his vehicle is in the courthouse parking lot. Make it quick. Just hunch, I got." and he snapped his phone shut again.

*****************************************************

Angela was seated in the security. She sat in front of multiple monitors, she was breezing thru every bit of film that had taken place since before Brennen had left the court room. She saw where Brennen was led out of the court, and saw her walk down the hallway, and that was it. She discovered that the security only surveiled the public areas of the court, not the private offices. So what ever happened to Bren, would not be discovered on tape.

She picked up her phone, Booth wasn't going to like this.

Booth looked up, and saw a barrelling Caroline, headed his way.

"Caroline?"

"Cherie, your not going to believe this, but the judge released her."

"She's just going to walk right out of here, isn't she?"

"Fraid so, Cherie, and my hands are tied."

Great, he thought, what next?

"Any word, about Dr. Brennen?" she asked.

"None, yet, we've got a team searching the building, right now."

"Don't worry, Cherie, you'll find her." she shook his arm for emphasis. "and I mean that."

At that moment, Heather Taffett strolled out into the hall, accompanied by her lawyer. She was no longer shackled, and was without a guard escort.

"Whoa, where are you going?" Booth asked James, her attorney.

"My client is free to go, now, Agent Booth. She is innocent, and today's events have proven that."

"You've just helped a serial killer go free, how does that make you feel, James?"

"Like I did my job, Agent Booth." Heather Taffett looked at Booth, with a slight smirk on her face, which infuriated Booth.

"Hope you find, Dr. Brennen, Agent Booth." Mr James said, and then they walked out of the court, with his client.

Trial by Fire - Page 2 Empty Re: Trial by Fire

Post by dawn Thu May 13, 2010 12:17 am

He juggled the items that were in his arms, to reach into his pocket for his keys. He managed to insert the key, when the door knob turned, and the door flew open.

He looked up, "Glad you made it." He walked thru the door, sat his possesions on the table, and turned and closed the door behind him, and turned the lock.

"What is all that?" she nodded her head towards the stuff he'd placed on the table.

"Personal stuff, I took out of the van. Didn't want to leave anything behind."

"Where you leave it?"

"Down in the ghetto, it'll be stripped by morning." he laughed, they thought they were so smart.

He walked toward her, and she reached out and grabbed him, and pulled him to her. "How long has it been Heather? Two years?"

She fisted his shirts in both hands and ripped the buttoned front apart, buttons flying around the room.

"Hey!" his uniforms were expensive.

"Shut up, your not going to be needing them anymore, Remember?"

"Oh, yea." he bent his head down to her face, reaching for her. "I've missed you, Heather." and she slapped him.

Rearing back, he touched his face, drew back his hand and slapped her back, as hard as he could.

"I"d forgotten how rough you like it Heather." He pushed her none too gently against the wall, and grabbed her shirt w/both hands, and ripped it off of her. Rough hands reached out, for her.

She closed her eyes savoring this moment, of intense pleasure.

His hands closed over her breasts squeezing, pinching, causing her pain. She smiled. "Don't stop." She whispered loudly.

"No problem." He straightened up, and pushed her hard against the table, causing her to stumble over a chair. She fell over the back, hands resting flat on the table. From behind, he ripped her pants down.

"Is this what you want?" He pushed himself into her, and drove hard and deep.

Pain was radiating up her legs, it was all she could do, to remain standing. He was pounding into her, banging her into the table.

He reached around front, and grabbed her breast in a painful grip. She reached behind her head, and grabbed his hair, and yanked hard.

"Owww." he gritted his teeth, he had forgotten what a freak Heather was. Two can play at that, as he yanked her hair, even harder, as she began to laugh, hysteically.

"Agent Booth, they've found her." Booth's heart almost stopped.

"Where is she, is she okay?"

"She's alive, thats all I know, sorry Agent Booth." he was a low level agent, just starting his FBI career. "They found her in the courthouse basement." His radio telegraphed to them both, that they were bringing her up.

Booth took a deep breath, she was alive.

"Sir, their bringing her up on a stetcher." Booth strided over the elevator. He was watching the numbers light up, when he heard the elevator ding. The doors slid open. There she was lying on a stretcher.

"Bones, Bones." he ran to her side, and picked up her hand. "Why isn't she awake, is she injured?" he demanded answers. She was completely unresponsive.

"We don't know what's wrong with her. She had no visible sign of being injured. She could be drugged."

"Sweetie........."Angela ran over to them. "Why isn't she moving, is she okay?"

"We're taking her to the hospital."

"I'm riding with her." Booth turned to Angela, "Call the other's tell them, what's going on, I'm going to stay with Bones. I'll see you at the hospital." he turned on his heel, and followed the paramedics out.

"It was ketamine, Booth."

"Thanks, Cam." he snapped his phone shut.

"Ketamine was found in the syringe." he moved to the side of the bed, opposite of where the doctor was examining Brennen.

"That's good, Ketamine moves thru the body very quickly, and has no lingering affects. She should be awake in no time. I can't find any physical injuries of any kind. No signs of trauma, or sign of an altercation. Just the injection marks on the neck."

"I'm going to go and let the other's know, they are right outside."

"How is she, Booth?" Angela looked at him.

"She's okay, not awake yet, but soon." he tried to give Angela a smile.

"Awwwww Sweetie," Angela wrapped him in a hug, and whispered in his ear."You got her back, its going to be okay."

Booth sat down for the first time, and allowed himelf to relax. He rolled his head around on his shoulders, trying to ease his stiff neck.

"Booth, man, you look like crap." Booth had considered Hodgins, a friend now, for several years.

"Feel like crap, too."

"Agent Booth," a nurse stuck her head out, "she's waking up."

He hurried back to her side. He bent down, and picked up her hand, bringing it to her lips. "How are you?"

"I'm okay, what happened."

Booth took a few minutes to clue her in on the last couple of hours.

"Dr. Brennen, I see no reason for you not to go home tonight. As long as you have someone to stay with you."

"I do." and "she does." were said simultaniously.

"I'll have the nurse bring in the paperwork, then."

She was going home.

"Your not going to believe this, Booth?"

Booth looked towards the bedroom, he could hear Brennen moving around in there," Tell me what you got, Charlie."

"I ran the check on Walter Canon, it appears that he transferred here two years ago, and get this, he was reccomended by none other than States' Attorney, Heather Taffett."

"You got to be kidding me."

"That's not all, either. When I pulled his sheet, I got his picture. And his picture does not match the Wally Canon at the courthouse." he paused, "I sent the picture to your phone."

Booth immediatly reached or his phone, "Hold a sec, Charlie." He began to scroll down. "Your right, that is definately not our guy, looks similar in coloring, probably why they picked him."

"Where is the real Walter Canon? And why hasn't anyone noticed him not around anymore?" they both knew, most likely what happened to the real Walter.

"We're still checking it out, I'll let you know, when I get something new."

"How she doing?" Charlie asked him about Brennen.

"She's seems okay, but I'm not taking any chances."

"I'm glad you found her Booth." Charlie knew these two belonged together, like everyone else did

"Gotta go, Charlie, thanks for letting me know. I'll talk to you in the morning."

"Booth." Bones was calling out to him from the bedroom.

He began doublechecking all the locks, and windows, "Coming, Bones." he wasn't taking anymore chances.

He had double, and triple checked the doors, and all the windows.

"Booth." she called him from the other room.

He walked into her bedroom. "I'm here, Bones." she was already dressed for bed. "you feeling okay, Bones?"

"Booth, I told you, I'm fine." she sighed. "I don't remember any of it."

He sat down on the bed, next to her. "I can't believe, I almost lost you, and I just got you." He kissed her brow, and pulled her into his arms, as he leaned back against the head board. He wasn't letting her go, or out of his sight tonight. She belonged to him.

She layed her head on his chest, and listened to his heart beat. He smelled of his aftershave, and that sexy cologne, that had always driven her crazy.

She nuzzled her face into his neck. "Bones, you should get some sleep, you should be tired." He kissed the tip of her nose.

"Booth, I took a really long nap today, I'm not tired." she kissed his neck, and she could feel his pulse race. "In fact, I feel pretty awake, right now." she kissed him again. She turned her head to kiss his cheek, instead, she met his lips, when he turned to look at her.

She reached up, and loosened his tie. He went to take it off, "No, let me." She pushed his hands away. Slowly she unknotted his tie, and pulled it,and tossed it to a chair. She reached up to his top button, and slipped it free. She looked up at Booth, "Are you tired?" and kissed him again.

"Not really." he took a deep breath.

"Good." and she slipped a few more buttons free. "I'm glad to hear it." she was down to the last button, and when it was free, she spread his shirt out, and pushed it off his shoulders. She ran her hands behind his head, and behind his shoulders. She could feel his tension. "Turn around." Behind him, she kneeded his muscles, working them with her fingers, until the tightness was gone. She bent her head, and kissed one shoulder, and then moved to the other. "Isn't that better?" she asked him.

Booth felt her move away from his back. "Stay." she got up and walked over to the lights, and flicked them off. When she came back, she pulled him to his feet, and reached down to his belt. His hands were already there undoing the buckle. She grasped his hands with hers. "Let me." and pulled his belt free. She slipped the button holding his trousers together, free. Pushing them off his hips they fell to the floor. She slid her hands up his legs, until she reached the elastic in his boxers. She slid them to the floor.

Still standing, she pushed him backwards, until his legs hit the bed. Giving him another strong push, he fell back on the bed.

He heard the sound of clothes rustleing, felt the bed dip, and Bones slid in beside him. He reached for her in the dark. He pulled her to him, feeling her breath on his face, he pulled her even closer, stretching his neck he reached up for her lips. He kissed her, and kissed her again, slanting his mouth over, and over, only stopping to take a breath.

"I never thought it would be like this, with anyone." he whispered in her ear, and kissed her deeply over, and over again. Mouths, tongues mingleing, mindlessly.

"I love you, Booth." He couldn't see her, but she could feel her. She was kissing his chest, caressing him, touching him, everywhere, making him crazy. God, how she wanted this man. She slid her body down his, ever so slowly, her lips, never leaving his. She deepened the kiss, and rose over him, she felt his need, and his desire, and pushed against him, and made him, hers. She heard Booth, gasp, and knew he wanted this, as much, as she did. She moved against him, and heard him groan. Tonight was about them, everything else, they would worry about tomorrow.

Trial by Fire - Page 2 Empty Re: Trial by Fire

Post by dawn Sun May 16, 2010 8:56 am

He woke up, when the sun hit his eyes. Turning away from the light, he opened his eyes. He saw her spread eagled across the bed. He moved to get up, and found her leg thrown over his lower body. None too gently, he threw her leg off, and he put his feet to the floor, and stood. He looked down at her, and not for the first time, wondering what exactly had he gotten himself into.

He walked to the bathroom, feeling stinging on his back, and sore stiff spots all over his body. He looked into the mirror, saw fresh bruises forming over his chest. Turning his back toward the mirror, he saw deep scratches on his back, many of them. The crazy b1tch, had actually drawn blood.

Bending over, he turned on the water, and waited for it to run clear, before dipping his hands under it, and sluicing it over his face, waking him up.

If only he'd had those account numbers, she'd still be in jail, and he'd be living the highlife somewhere, on some tropical island, drinking fruity cocktails, and enjoying the native women, far away from Heather Taffett.

He didn't trust her, and was pretty sure, she didn't trust him, either. They'd been partners in crime for over five years, lovers almost as long, and still yet, his intuition told him, never to trust her, and let his guard down, or it might be his last mistake. He knew she was very smart, smarter than he was. He also knew what she was capable of, especially when pushed into a corner. He just had to be certain, to never make the mistake of under estimating her. Most people did, and they always regretted it.

He just had to wait, get his cut, and he'd be gone, sooner, rather than later, he hoped.

Post by dawn Sun May 16, 2010 8:58 am

The sound of his ring woke him. Opening his eyes, he looked down, to see Brennen still asleep. Her head resting in the crook of his arm, her arm resting across his stomach. Very slowly, so not to wake her, he lifted her arm, and slid his shoulder out from under her head. Making slow movements, he slipped from the bed, picking up his boxers, and slipping them on, as he went.

Closing the door softly, he walked into the living room, picked up his phone. It was Charlie.

"Charlie." when he picked up. "What you got?"

"Alot, Booth. Why don't we meet up at the Hoover, in an hour."

"Make it the Jeffersonian, Charlie, we'll be there." he thought Brennen would be more comfortable there, and plus they had excellent securty. He was keeping her close, until all this was settled.

"No problem, Booth." he snapped his phone shut.

Disappointed that he couldn't let Bones sleep in, he began to make coffee, he knew how much she loved her morning java.

Booth, picked up his phone, and called Cam, she picked up on the first ring. "Everything okay, Booth?" she was worried.

"Fine, Cam, Bones and I are coming in, this morning, we're meeting Charlie. We're going to need all the squints on this."

"You got it, big guy. We're all here."

"I knew you would be, Cam." and he did. "We'll be in about, an hour." he snapped his phone shut.

"Booth." he turned and Bones was leaning against the door way, looking tassled and sleepy, wrapped in a feminine pink robe.

"Charlie called, he's got some stuff, we need to go over." He walked over to her, and bent down and gave her a gentle kiss, "Good morning, Bones." and pulled her in for a hug, kissing her neck. "I was hopeing you could sleep in this morning."

"When do we need to go in?" she layed her head against his chest.

"An hour."

She nodded her head. "I'm going to jump in the shower, want to come?" she turned and walked back into her room.

She didn't have to ask him twice, he turned and followed.

Trial by Fire - Page 2 Empty Re: Trial by Fire

Post by dawn Tue May 18, 2010 11:38 pm

"Here's what we know about Walter Canon." they were all there, sitting around a big table listening."Walter Canon, by all counts was a good guy. A cop, on the job, for over fifteen years. He had a clean record, no problems on the job. His parents died over ten years ago, in a car accident, no siblings. Had a wife, got divorced, no kids."

"That explains why no family was looking for him, he didn't have any."

"Six years ago, he transferred to the NYPD, where guess who was working in the Prosecuting Attorney's Office?"

"Heather Taffett."

"We're not sure, when they met, but it was pretty well known, within the department, that they were seeing each other, romantically, I mean." Charlie continued, he passed out a picture of Walter Canon.

They all looked at the picture. He had the same coloring as courthouse "Wally." but that was where the similarities stopped. He was older, and heavier than the Wally, they knew.

"So, Heather Taffett, meets the real Walter Canon, strikes up a friendship, seduces him." Angela felt sorry for the real Walter.

" Heather Taffett was quickly moving up the ranks, and got transferred to D.C. office, where she reccomended Walter Canon, for the job, at the Federal Courthouse."

"He probably thought he'd won the lottery." Booth said. "He'd been a beat cop for fifteen years, working at a Courthouse, would have been a dream job, with great benefits."

"What we know, next," Charlie continued, "the Walter Canon, who showed up, that first day at work, was not this Walter Canon," he tapped the picture, but, we think was this man, John Wallace." he passed out a new picture, which was a mug shot.

"Oh, my God, that's him." Angela recognized him immediately. "He's a little older, and his hair is darker, but that's definately him."

"What do we know about him." Booth asked.

"He was arrested in New York, under suspician of kidnapping, and blackmale, and some other petty crimes. From what I gather it was a open and shut case. They had solid evidence, they had no doubt he was guilty."

"What happened?" Hodgins wanted to know,"How did he get out."

"Apparently all the evidence, the police gathered disappeared during lockup. And the only witness to the crime, turned up dead."

"Convenient." Hodgins was angry.

"Guess who was the prosecuting attorney in the case?"

"Heather Taffett." they all said it aloud, simultaneously.

"Yes."

It was all starting to make sense.

Trial by Fire - Page 2 Empty Re: Trial by Fire

Post by dawn Thu May 20, 2010 12:30 am

"I don't understand why he took Bren, yesterday?" Angela was puzzled.

"It's called diversion, a ruse, a conspiracy...," Booth interrupted Hodgins, before he could further his rant..

"It was a diversion, to distract us from the case, Angela. Caroline told me, there was a chance that she would have gotten off, without any of the physical evidence presented in court. Her attorney pretty much made my testimony moot, making it about my brain tumor, and he got Bones to admit, that it would have taken more than one person, to commit the crimes. The judge felt like without solid evidence, or any proof that she had help, he had to drop the case."

"We didn't know about Wallace yesterday." Charlie added.

"Doesn't matter, Cheri." Caroline breezed thru the door. "Ever heard of double jepardy? She can't be tried again, on those charges. However, and I mean this is a big however, she could be charged with a new crime, perhaps the murder of one Walter Canon." she slapped her brief case on the table.

"We don't even know where Walter Canon is, how are we going to prove she killed him?"

"I put his vital statistics in the missing persons data base, this morning, and guess was popped up?" Caroline looked at them. "Anyone?" she arched her brows around the table.

"Let me take a guess." They all turned toward the doorway. "You found the remains, of someone, that fits his description, age, race, and time frame, to be one Walter Canon."

"Max Brennen, figures you'd be the one to figure that out." Caroline squinted her eyes at him. "Takes one to know one, I always say."

Max walked around the table to Brennen. "I don't show up, for one day, and what happens Booth, you let a psycho kidnap my little girl." he bent down to Brennen, "You okay honey, sorry I wasn't there for you."

"I'm okay, Dad, they didn't hurt me." she hugged him.

"I've made arrangements, to have that set of remains sent here, should arrive sometime this afternooon." Caroline looked up, "It's up to you, squints, to figure out, the who, and how. We already have the why."

"Booth, can I talk to you, a minute." Max jerked his head towards the door.

"Be right back, Bones." he stood and walked out the door.

"Max."

"I already got people out looking for them."

"Max this is a matter for the FBI, let them handle it." Booth interrupted.

"Yea, because they've done such a bang up job." sometimes, Max really got on his nerves.

"This is my daughter we're talking about, Booth."

"I know that Max, believe me, I know."

"Don't ask me to stop, because I won't."

"I could have you arrested."

"You won't." Max stared him down, not blinking.

"Don't try that with me Max, I'm not easily intimidated."

"I'll find them." he turned to go. "Tell Tempi, I'll talk to her later."

"Max." Booth called out, Max turned back, "If you find anything, call me." Max didn't say anything, just turned and walked out.

"Booth." it was Charlie, he stuck his head out of the conference room door. "Just got a call. They found his van, stripped, downtown."

"Figures."

"It'll be here, within the hour, maybe you could have some of your squints take a look."

"Where's Keenen?"

"He left."

"Is he going to be a problem?"

"No problem, Charlie." Not yet, anyway.

"I've got to get back to the Hoover, I'll call, if I find anything new."

*****************************************************

"Caroline." Booth walked in the door. "I need you to contact Heather Taffett's attorney."

"What are you thinking, Booth?"

"I want to talk to Heather Taffett. I have some questions for her concerning Walter Canon."

"I'll make the call, Cheri, hope you know what your doing."

"Bones," Booth looked over at her. "Your dad left, said to tell you, he'd talk to you later."

Frowning, "Where did he go?" she knew her father.

"Didn't say." Booth shrugged, trying to be nonchalant, he didn't want her worrying about Max, on top of everything else.

"Hodgins, they are bringing Wallace's van in, can you take a look, and let me know what you find. I need to know everything it can tell us."

"NO problem. If something is there, I will find it." Hodgins gritted his teeth, he was willing to do what ever it took, to bring the Gravedigger to justice.

"Angela, as soon as we get those remains, I need you to get me a face. We got to be sure it's him."

"Cam, I'm having his DNA, sent over, from the NYPD, how soon will we have confirmation."

"I'll go as fast as I can, but its going be a couple of hours."

"Bones, we're going to need, cause of death, asap."

"We're just waiting for the remains to get here." she hated the delay.

"Alright, people," Cam clapped her hands, "Lets get to work, Dr. Hodgins your on the van, as soon as it gets here."

Brennen stood up, "I'm going to my office." and she left.

"Alright, squints, get to work."

Booth found Brennen in her office, on her phone. She looked over at him, mouthed "Dad," pointing to the phone. "Dad, call me, please."

"He didn't answer." Booth nodded at her, pulled her into his arms.

"He's a big boy, Bones."

"Yes, that what concerns me. He didn't say anything else?"

"Nothing specific."

"I've got to go to the Hoover, for a couple of hours, I don't want you leaving this place, Bones."

"I want to go with you."

"Not a good idea."

"I don't have anything to do, until the remains get here. I can help you."

"Bones, listen to me. I am going to question Heather Taffett, you cannot be there." She stepped out of his arms.

"I'll just watch, I won't go in."

"Bones,...." she interrupted him.

"I guess I'll can go out, and start looking for my dad, then."

No way in hell, was she going out alone. "Fine, but you have to stay behind the window, she can't even know your there."

"She won't."

Trial by Fire - Page 2 Empty Re: Trial by Fire

Post by dawn Mon May 24, 2010 10:49 am

She stretched like a cat, arching her back. Sitting up, grimacing, against the pain, and soreness, she glanced around. He was gone.

Standing, she flexed her muscles, trying to work out some of the stiffness, she staggered into the bathroom. She stared at her reflection. Amazing, what a few days makes. A few days ago, she was waking up in a jail cell, and now, she looked around, she was waking up in a dumpy motel, definately on the way up to better things, the first of many.

From the other room, she heard the ring of her cell phone. Hobbleing over to her bag, and picked up her phone. Hmmm, it was Mason James, her attorney. Debating for a moment, whether to answer, her curiousity got the better of her.

"Yes." she answered.

"Heather?"

"Yes."

"Mason James."

"Yes."

"Caroline Julian, just called my office. They need you to come down, and answer some questions."

"About........" she waited.

"Not sure, but I will be there to advise you. Can you be at the Hoover Building in an hour?"

"I'll be there." and she hung up.

*************************************************

Mason James, sat slack jawed in his office, phone still in his hand.

Her abrupt nature, rubbed him wrong on so many levels. He'd been practicing law for over five years, and had many different kinds of clients, of all walks of life, and Heather Taffett, was the only one, that he'd ever had twinges of guilt defending. It was his job to defend her. She had told him, she was innocent, he had believed her. Now, he wasn't so sure.

She heard keys rattleing in the door.

"Where have you been?" he looked up.

"I was hungry." he gestured to a bag of donuts, and two cups of coffee.

"You can't be seen."

"I'm not stupid." she scoffed at him.

He noticed she was dressed, "Where you going?"

"My attorney called, seems the FBI has some questions for me."

"Your not going!"

"Of course, I am." it'll be fun seeing Agent Booth, again.

"Be careful."

She looked at him, and smirked, "I know what I am doing, I am an attorney." She opened the door, turned back, "don't leave again, I'm warning you." And she walked out the door.

A chill ran down his spine, all the sudden he had a very bad feeling about this.

"Remember, your to stay behind the glass." Booth turned his head and looked at her. They were on their way to the Hooover.

"What if I have a question?"

"I'll wear my ear piece. I'll ask it." he looked at her. "Bones, I need to know, you can do this?"

She looked at him,"You don't trust me, Booth?"

Booth reached over and picked up her hand, and brought it to his lips. "Bones, its not about trust." he gave a grin.

"I don't understand."

"Oh, let me see.....the last time you were with Heather Taffett, you knocked her out, Bones." he was smiling.

"She deserved it." she didn't regret, never would.

"See, that's exactly what I'm talking about."

"Okay, Booth, you made your point. I'll be good, and stay behind the glass."

"That's my girl." he pulled into the parking lot. "You ready?" he looked at her.

"I'm always ready."

*****************************************************

"Charlie, you got everything in place?"

"Got it covered, Booth, as soon as she leaves, we'll be on her. I got three different agents following her."

"She's smart, don't let them be seen. She'll figure it out."

"She'll never see them."

"Good, time to do this." he looked over to where Brennen was staring thru the glass. Heather Taffett sat at a table with her attorney, patiently waiting, staring at the glass, as if she could see who was behind it.

"Do you think she knows we're here?" Brennen asked.

"Not sure, Dr. Brennen." Sweets answered her. He'd also been studying Heather Taffett. He was convinced she was a sociopath. "She was in law enforcement, so she knows the procedures."

"I'm going in."

"Agent Booth, I really don't appreciate you dragging my client back down here, the charges were dismissed."

"Sorry to inconvenience your client, James, but we have some questions for her."

"Concerning..........................."

"This man." Booth sat down at the table, and slid a picture of Walter Canon, across the table.

Mas James, reached out, and picked it up, handed it to Heather Taffett.

"Do you know him?" Booth asked, staring her.

"Who is this, Agent Booth." James asked.

"Let's ask your client, James."

"Am I supposed to know this person?" shrugging her shoulders, nonchalantly.

Booth slid another picture across the table. It showed Walter, in a tux, and Heather Taffett, in a formal dress, sitting at a table together, arms linked, and smiling. "This is from a party given in honor of the mayor. Don't you remember? He was your date, for the party."

"Oh, yea, I do remember him. Vaguely." she smirked.

"I am advising you not to say anything else." he turned to Booth,"What is this about, Agent Booth?"

"Let me tell, you, what this is about. This man, Walter Canon, transferred into the NYPD, five or six years ago. He was a good man, a good cop. Your client," he nodded his head toward Taffett,"for what ever reason picked him out, befriended him, began a sexual relationship with him."

"That's not against the law, Agent Booth."

"Your client,"Booth refused to call her by name."was quickly making a reputation for herself, and was moving up the ranks, got transferred to D.C." he paused. "your client pulled some strings, and got Walter a cushy job at the Federal Courthouse. He was a perfect candidate for the job, he had experience, and excellent record, he was ideal for the job. A perfect fit, really."

"Where is this going Agent Booth?" Mason was puzzled.

"Somewhere, in between being at the NYPD, and being transferred to D.C. Walter, disappeared." he looked at Taffett. "Do you know this man?" Booth slid a mug shot picture of John Wallace across the table.

"Am I supposed to?" she looked at him.

"You should." Booth studied her face, "You were the prosecutor on his case." Booth let a moment pass,"Apparently, all the evidence, and the only witness, to his crime disapeared. Convenienient, huh? With no evidence, and no witnesses, all charges were dropped."

Mason James sat up. "Don't say anything, Heather."

Booth slid an object across the table, in a plastic bag. It was a name tag, and badge. It read, Walter Canon, but had the picture of John Wallace on it. "Apparantly, this man, John Wallace, was using the name Walter Canon, and working at the very same courthouse, that you pulled strings to get Walter into."

"A coincidence?" Booth looked at her again. "It just so happens, that this man, John Wallace, masquerading as Walter Canon, was working the day that Dr. Brennen was taken from the courthouse." a pause, "and also conveniently, he hasn't been seen since your case was dismissed."

"I don't know, anything about John Wallace."

"What do you know about Walter Canon?"

"We dated for a while, he was supposed to transfer, when he didn't show up, I just assumed he was still with the NYPD."

"So, you don't have any idea what happened to Walter, or where he is?"

"That's right." no expression on her face.

"Don't say anything else, Heather. Agent Booth, unless you have a warrant, we're done here." James stood up. "Time to go." He led Heather Taffett to the door.

"Agent Booth, if you have any other questions, you have my number." and they walked out.

"Agent Booth." he was stepping out of the interrogation room, and into the hallway.

"Sweets" he looked up, no Brennen.

"Where's Bones?" he was craning his neck, looking around.

Sweets looked a little nervous. "that's why I was coming to get you."

Booth froze and looked at Sweets. "What?" he didn't have a good feeling.

"Max Keenen was here."

"Did he know Taffett was in there?"

"Not til Dr. Brennen told him."

"Where is he?"

"That's the thing," Sweet's paused, dreading telling him the rest, "he followed Heather Taffett, when she left here."

"Damn, Sweets, you could have stopped him, or told me sooner." this wasn't good.

"Wait, where's Bones?"

Sweet's grimaced, "That's the thing, I've been trying to tell you. She went with him."

"What and you let her go." he barked at Sweets.

"I tried to tell her you wouldn't like it."

"Try harder next time." he was mad. Mad at them both.

*****************************************************

"Honey, how many times are you going to ignore his call?" Max looked at his daughter. "That's got to be the tenth call in the last ten minutes. It's from Booth, isn't it?"

"He won't understand."

"Maybe not, but you could still answer it."

"I will. They're turning left, Dad. Don't lose her."

Bones, pick up the phone. . Booth was pacing in his office, he snapped his phone shut, in frustration, still not quite believing that she was with Max following a serial killer. What in the hell was Max thinking letting her go with him? What was she thinking?

Booth tried Max's number, with no luck. He hardly ever answered his phone, "Max, I need to talk to Bones, where are you?" and silently added be careful.

******************************************************************

"She's a devious one." Max looked at his daughter. Taffett was leading them on a wild goose chase. Her series of sharp turns, useage of side steets, and random turns, during high traffic, had already managed to lose the FBI tails, that were following her. Her cab, merged into traffic, "do you think she knows, we're here?"

Brennen looked to her dad. "I don't think so. See, how she's doubleing back."

Brennen's phone rang again. She looked down at it, feeling guilty. "Honey, just answer it."

She let it go to her voice mail. "Tempi, I thought you and Booth, were... um, together." He looked at her.

"We are, but it's complicated, Dad."

"Why is it complicated?"

"It just is."

"Do you love him?"

"Yes." she didn't beat around the bush.

"Then call him."

"Booth feels the need to," she paused, searching her mind for the correct wording, "assert his alpha male tendencies around me."

"Sweetheart, that's what we men do, when we're with someone we love. We protect what is ours. I used to make your mother crazy, with it."

"It can be a bit oppressive at times, Dad. I am quite capable of protecting myself."

"Like yesterday."

"Dad, your supposed to be on my side."

"I am, Sweetheart. That's why I am telling you to call him."

*****************************************************************

"Crap!" Hodgin's was staring at what was left of John Wallace's van. It had been found, and hauled to the Jeffersonian. Not only had it been stripped, it had been set on fire.

He stuck his head in the open door. He could smell some kind of accelerant, maybe gas, or lighter fluid. The interior was completelly obliterated by the fire. The carpeting gone, the walls of the van, were down to the bare metal.

The front seats, were basicaly down to wires, and melted plastic, all upholstery incinerated. The dash was still intact, but melted. All the windows had been shattered, bits and tiny shards of safety glass littered the metal floor.

Booth was not going to like this, he opened his phone.

"Booth." he answered on the first ring.

"Hey, it's Hodgins."

"Got anything, yet?"

"Bad news, whoever stripped it, set it on fire. Probably didn't want any finger prints recovered."

"How bad."

"Dude, its been totally destroyed, there's nothing left on the inside."

"Keep looking, Hodgins, there's got to be something there. Something, we can use."

"If there's something here, I will find it."

"You haven't heard from Dr. Brennen, have you?"

"Yea, a few minutes ago. She wasn't with you?"

Errrrrr, that woman,"What did she say?"

"She just asked about the van, but it wasn't here yet."

"Did she mention where she was?"

"No, I thought she was at the Hoover."

"Call me, if you find anything, Hodgins."
